color pumpkins, etc.
Pumpkins, watermelons and gourds are evidence of the county's garden abundance. There are many colorful, varied exhibits at the fair (along with rides, music, games, food and livestock), which began Tuesday and runs through Saturday night at Rotary Field. (Photo by Linda Hylton)

color jrotc and freedom flag
JROTC members presented the Freedom Flag to Patrick County High School on Thursday, Sept. 11, in memory of 9/11/2001, when the United States was attacked by terrorists. The flag, designed by Richard Melito of Richmond, features a blue background which represents all Americans united for freedom; red stripes symbolizing the blood of those who died in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and on Flight 93 in Pennsylvania; white stripes commemorating the rescue workers, police officers, firefighters and other first responders; and a white star symbolizing "all who lived and died for freedom." The flag was designated the state's official symbol of remembrance by then-Governor Mark Warner, and is part of Patriot Day observations in schools throughout the commonwealth.
