VELMA V. REDD
Velma W. Via Redd, 85, of Martinsville, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Patrick County on March 9, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Dennis Lee Via and Hattie Smith Via Finney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Redd; two brothers, Curtis Via and Henry Via; and two sisters, Lucille Hill and Ossie Albury.
She was a member of Mt. Olive No. 1 Christian Church, the CWF and the Preston Community Center.
Surviving are one daughter, Teresa Harkness of Martinsville; one sister, Ada Wimbush of Martinsville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Mt. Olive East Christian Church by the Revs. Carrol Rucker and Kenneth Davis. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church before the funeral.
Arrangements are by Hines Funeral Service.
EMMA M. SCOTT
Emma Mae Scott, 79, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
She was born June 5, 1928, in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Roby Hoston and Roxie Zina Hall Scott. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mettie S. Gwynn and Lila S. Comer; two infant sisters; and a brother, Gilbert R. Scott
She retired from Pine State Knitwear with more than 40 years of service and was a member of Mount Bethel Moravian Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Viola S. Martin and Isabel S. Golding, both of Mount Airy; one brother, Leonard Scott of Roanoke; seven nieces; three nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Friday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy by the Rev. Arlis Thomas Burial was at Skyline Memory Gardens. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
CALVIN H. VIA
Calvin H. Via, 90, of Bassett, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, following an extended illness.
He was born October 11, 1917 in Spray, N.C. (now a part of Eden, N.C.), and was the youngest of the 10 children of the late Pinkney Via and Betty Ruth Via Via. He was also preceded in death by his wife Polly, and eight brothers and sisters.
His career ranged from construction contractor to brick mason to professional photographer. He and his wife established and operated The Portrait House Studio for many years until her death in 1996.
Surviving are one sister, Lillian Luther of Eden; one son, Harold Via of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson; one great-grandson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Blackberry Baptist Church with Dr. G.H. Vaughn and the Rev. Glenn Voss officiating. Burial will be in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Arrangements are by Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett.
