Lady Cougars advance to state quarterfinals

By Will Hutchens
The Patrick County High School girls' basketball squad will play in the state quarterfinals after winning the regional championship last week.
The Lady Cougars played the Tunstall Trojans in the semifinals of the Division III Regional Tournament at Patrick County High School. They held the lead after one quarter of play, but the Trojans battled back to take a 23-22 lead going into the locker room at half-time.
The Lady Cougars kept battling in the second half, taking a five-point lead into the fourth quarter. The deficit stayed at five in the fourth and final quarter, sending the Cougars to the regional championship game for the second year in a row. The final score was PC, 48; Tunstall, 43.
"Tunstall is a great team, and much improved from our previous match-ups. We were able to use our full court defensive pressure to help pull away some in the second half," said Coach Glenn Burnett.
Junior Kylene Culler led the Lady Cougars with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Whitney Bowers added 11 points in the winning effort.
The Lady Cougars took on Graham High School in the Division III Regional Championship at PCHS last Friday. Patrick County led from the beginning, holding on to a 14-point lead at half-time. The Lady Cougars kept Graham at arm's length the rest of the way, winning 52-39.
The Lady Cougars dominated in the paint, scoring 35 inside, compared to Graham's 20. Jamyra Giles, Whitney Bowers, and Casey Bradshaw shut down Southwest District Player of the Year Chelsea Gallinger, holding her to just five points.
Piedmont District Player of the Year Kylene Culler led the Lady Cougars with a 20 point, 10 rebound double-double effort. Casey Bradshaw and Deleigh Barbour each added nine points in the contest. "This was a great accomplishment for the girls, they really deserve this. It was nice to have the opportunity to win in our gym and cut down the nets," said Burnett.
"We would like to thank the parents, community, and students for coming out to support the Cougars during the regional tournament," he added. "It was really nice to have the stands full of Cougars this week. Please come out and support the Cougars as we travel to the Salem Civic Center."
The Lady Cougars will play the Northside Vikings at 7 p.m. on Friday in the VHSL AA state quarterfinal round.

Cougars end season with loss in regional tournament

By Will Hutchens
The Patrick County High School boys' basketball squad traveled to Bluefield last Tuesday to take on the Graham G-Men in the quarterfinals of the Division III Regional Tournament.
The Cougars started out slowly, allowing the hot shooting G-Men to take an early lead. The lead shrunk to as little as two, however, as the Cougars made a charge in the second quarter. The effort did not give the Cougars a lead, and that is as close as they would come to the hometown G-Men.
Graham pushed the lead out to over 20 with strong play inside, and hot outside shooting. The G-Men never looked back and won 71-49 over the visiting Patrick County team.
Parker Heath was a bright spot for the Cougars, scoring a game-high 19 points. Jalen Reynolds added 12 points in the game.
The Cougars finished their season with a 5-15 record. The team's regional appearance was the first for PCHS since the 1999 season.
The Cougars will be losing guards Derrick Agee, Parker Heath, Will Hutchens, Pierre Scales, and Josh Walker, as well as forwards Kegan Arrington, Colin Dunlap, and Marcus Wood to graduation. The Cougars will rely on youth next season, as only two seniors will be returning from last year's squad.
